In this episode we welcome one of the world's leading shoulder surgeons, Dr Larry Gulotta. Dr. Gulotta shares his hot takes on what makes for great rehab, what his interventions are for the labral tears in professional pitchers and how he hopes to change the outlook for professional pitchers with labral pathology. Dr. Lawrence V. Gulotta is the Chief of the Shoulder and Elbow Division of the Sports Medicine Institute at Hospital for Special Surgery. He specializes in shoulder surgery and sports medicine, including arthroscopic and open surgeries of the shoulder, and is the Head Orthopedic Surgeon for the New York Mets. Dr. Gulotta has dedicated his career to understanding and treating shoulder conditions. He has performed research on new ways to improve rotator cuff healing, as well as ways to improve the design and performance of shoulder replacements. He has received several awards for his research, authored numerous clinical and basic science research papers, and given presentations at national and international meetings. He currently serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, and the Journal of Orthopaedic Research. He is also on the Editorial Board of the HSS Journal. As an undergraduate, Dr. Gulotta attended Johns Hopkins University, where he studied biology and played varsity football. He was recognized with several academic and athletic honors. He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and named to the GTE Academic All-American Football Team in his senior year. Dr. Gulotta attended Harvard Medical School followed by Hospital for Special Surgery, where he trained in orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, and shoulder surgery. In addition to his training in the United States, Dr. Gulotta acquired further training in shoulder surgery at specialized centers across Europe. He completed an AO Shoulder Trauma Fellowship in Bern, Switzerland, and also observed leading shoulder surgeons in Zurich, Switzerland, and Lyon, France. His diverse training has allowed him to perform cutting-edge arthroscopic and open surgeries for the treatment of shoulder instability, labral tears, shoulder replacements, large rotator cuff tears, revision shoulder surgeries, and shoulder fractures. Dr. Gulotta is also interested in athletic injuries of the shoulder. During his training, he served as an Assistant Physician for the New York Football Giants, Iona University Athletics, the FDNY semi-professional Football Team, and the New York City Public Schools Athletic League.

Emily Perrin, LMSW is a mental health therapist, mindfulness and performance coach located in the Baltimore, Maryland area. As a former DI soccer player at the University of Virginia and former DI soccer coach at the University of Pennsylvania, Emily knows firsthand the demands and pressures of the elite athlete. Emily combines her expertise and training in Mindfulness to work with athletes through several practices including meditation, breath work and yoga. She believes that in order to enhance an athlete's performance we need to focus on helping the athlete be the healthiest and most efficient human they can be. Through her company, Perrin Wellness and Performance she works with athletes and coaches all over the country including teams at Duke University, the University of Michigan, Villanova University and beyond. Her areas of expertise include working with performance anxiety, enhancing the mind body connection and athlete recovery. But her skill set, expertise and holistic approach to performance enhancement is one that is extremely applicable to not just athletes. The tools and skills she teaches can be used by all, including Sports PTs. In this podcast we discuss what Mindfulness is as well as how we can be using it both as Sports PTs and with our patients. We also cover stress and burnout. Many Sports PTs face both of these and learning how to navigate them can be a difference maker for your overall health and longevity in the profession. We also touch on what challenges the injured athlete is facing and signs that we should be looking for in our athletes in order to refer them to the proper mental health professional.
